The causes and prevention of soil erosion

Erosion is the removal of the fertile top soil, either washed away by water or blown away by wind. It may also be caused by human or natural activities.

The causes and differents method of preventing soil erosion:

Cause                                         

1. Falling water  

Prevention

* Keep the land under vegetative cover and  mulch the field to prevent the raindrop to break up soil crumbs and move soil particles.

2. Too many animals

Prevention              

* Do not overstock the land. Do not overgraze the land. Always leave some plant cover.

3. Flowing water

Prevention               

 *Terrace the land, add organic material to improve infiltration. Plough along contours to prevent the water to uproot crops when water is flowing.

4. Wrong cultivation of steep slopes     

Prevention

* Avoid ploughing along the slope. Practice terracing or contour ploughing and control run off water.

5. Wrong period of grass burning  

Prevention      

*Burning should be done towards the rain season to promote fast growth of vegetation.
